Mellau | Loop around the Rossstelle and to the Kanisfluh
Across alpine pastures to the striking summit.
The day of hiking commences comfortably with a cable-car ride to the heart of the alpine region of Mellau. The Simma mountain restaurant is located to the right of the mountain station. That’s where a regional mountain breakfast will be awaiting you. After breakfast, follow the signposts towards Kanisfluh. The route commences to the left of the Roßstellenbahn cable car. Then it leads past the Kanisalpe on to a forest road until it reaches a narrow hiking trail on the left that will take you to the Kanisfluh's summit. You’ll have a magnificent view of the Bregenzerwald’s villages and the surrounding mountains once you’ve reached the cross at the top.
You’ll hike back downhill from the Kanisfluh’s summit and continue to the Alpengasthaus Edelweiß alpine inn on the Öberle where lunch will be served in a unique location.
The Alemannic word ‘Fluh’ means rock. ‘Kanis’ is said to be derived from ‘Canisio’, an immigrant who, according to legend, came to the Bregenzerwald from the canton of Valais in Switzerland in around 1400.
A wide forest path will now take you past the Wurzachalpe, back to the Rossstelle and from there by the Mellaubahn cable car back to the village. The hike will then continue to the centre of Mellau. It will conclude at Hotel Bären's Café Deli where home-made sweet delights will be served (vegan and gluten-free on request). Word about the café’s young and cosmopolitan atmosphere spread quickly and it is now quite famous.
